Did the River Liffey ever imagine it would be personified in bronze? Here, in Croppies’ Acre Memorial Park, rests Anna Livia. She is no ordinary sculpture. Anna Livia embodies the spirit of Dublin’s very own River Liffey. The name “Anna Livia” is a nod to James Joyce’s “Finnegans Wake,” where it represents a character embodying the river. This sculpture is a gift from businessman Michael Smurfit. He commissioned it in 1988 for Dublin’s Millennium celebrations, a tribute to his father. Anna Livia’s journey hasn’t been easy. Originally, she graced O’Connell Street with her presence. However, pranks and litter led to her infamous nickname, “The Floozie in the Jacuzzi”! After a decade in storage, she found a new home here in 2011. Her journey to Croppies’ Acre was unique. Anna Livia took a final, symbolic journey down the Liffey. It was a fitting farewell, allowing Dubliners one last chance to admire her. Today, she rests peacefully in a purpose-built pond, close to the river she embodies. Her reclining pose, a change from her O’Connell Street days, is a perfect fit for her peaceful new surroundings.
