Consider the echoes of melodies. These melodies resonate within the walls of the Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to Turkey’s cultural evolution.

The Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi stands as the national directorate for opera and ballet. It has venues in several Turkish cities. Ankara is one of them. The directorate operates under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Let’s journey back to the Ottoman Empire. Even then, the seeds of opera were being sown. Selim III, a composer and poet, invited a foreign company. They staged an opera at Topkapı Palace in 1797. This marked an early engagement with the art form.

Fast forward to 1840. Gaetano Donizetti’s Belisario was translated into Turkish. It was performed in a newly built theatre. Italian architect Bosco designed it. Verdi’s operas reached wide audiences between 1846 and 1877. Italian companies mostly performed them.

However, constant warfare halted Turkish opera and ballet development. This peaked during the Balkan Wars and World War I. The Ottoman Empire collapsed as a result.

The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923. This ushered in a new era of cultural reforms under Ataturk. Talented young individuals were sent to Europe. They received professional training in music and performing arts. Upon returning, they became teachers. They taught at the Musiki Muallim Mektebi in Ankara. This school opened in 1924. They also taught at the Darulelhan in Istanbul.

Ahmet Adnan Saygun composed the first Turkish opera, Özsoy. Münir Hayri Egeli wrote the libretto. It premiered in 1934.

Paul Hindemith and Carl Ebert were invited to lecture at Musiki Muallim Mektebi in 1935. The school became the Ankara State Conservatory. Ebert stayed on as director. He oversaw the theatre school and opera studio for nine years.

The State Conservatory was firmly established in 1940. It comprised music, opera, ballet, and theatre schools. Students performed Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne. It was sung in Turkish. The Turkish Presidential Symphony Orchestra accompanied them.

The Ankara Opera House emerged in 1947. The Sergievi building was converted for this purpose. It officially opened on April 2, 1948. Pieces by the Turkish Five were performed. Ahmet Adnan Saygun’s Kerem also premiered.

The management of theatre and opera separated in 1958. This created the Turkish State Theatres and the State Opera and Ballet directorates.

Today, the Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi continues to thrive. It inspires with its performances. It also preserves Turkey’s rich artistic heritage. Its story is one of resilience and innovation. It echoes through every note. It reflects in every dance. The Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi remains a vibrant cultural landmark.
