On this very spot, before the Anglican International School Jerusalem became a beacon of learning, stood Jerusalem’s first modern hospital. Established in 1843 amidst rolling hills and olive groves, the site became synonymous with healing and compassion. The Anglican International School Jerusalem carries forward this legacy of caring, though its focus has shifted from physical well-being to intellectual growth. The Anglican International School Jerusalem, founded in 1962, boasts a rich history interwoven with the city’s own tumultuous past. The school’s roots trace back to two schools established within the Old City walls over a century earlier. One, a girls’ school championed by Bishop Samuel Gobat and Miss Caroline Cooper, opened in 1843. The other, coeducational, followed in 1857 under Rev. William Bailey. The Anglican International School Jerusalem, as we know it, began to take shape in the mid-20th century. After the relocation of Hadassah Hospital to Mount Scopus in 1961, the former hospital grounds were handed back, offering an opportunity for the Anglican school to evolve. Under Beryl Bradnack’s leadership, the school transitioned into the Anglican International School Jerusalem, embracing a vision of serving a diverse student body. Bradnack’s vision included Hebrew Christian families, children of Christian workers, those on short-term placements, and even Muslim, Christian Arab, and Jewish families. The Anglican International School Jerusalem weathered significant historical events, including the Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, and two Intifadas. Through it all, the school remained true to its founding vision, fostering an environment of tolerance and understanding. The Anglican International School Jerusalem offers a rigorous academic program from preschool to grade 12. The curriculum blends the British National Curriculum, the International Primary Curriculum, and the International Baccalaureate program. Remarkably, the Anglican International School Jerusalem remains non-selective, embracing students of all faiths. It employs a diverse staff, reflecting the multifaceted community it serves. The school’s commitment to harmony and understanding makes it a true testament to its founder’s vision.
