Dedicated on November 5 1922 the Anglican Church in Bucharest stands before you. A red brick building it sits near Grădina Icoanei. Its Neo-Gothic style is striking. Various members of the Royal Family attended over the years.

World War II brought closure. A church guardian and cleaner maintained it during those dark years. Paid by the Swiss Embassy she kept the building safe. The Anglican Church in Bucharest reopened on Christmas Day 1944. The Royal Navy and American military staff helped. After the Communists took over visiting priests held services. Only in 1966 did a permanent priest return.

The church was almost repurposed. During the 1970s suggestions surfaced to transform the Anglican Church in Bucharest into a library. Thankfully this plan was resisted. The Anglican Church in Bucharest is unique. It’s the only Anglican church building in the former Eastern Bloc countries to remain open throughout the Communist era.

Even during the harsh 1980s under Ceausescu’s regime worship continued. Romanians risked their jobs homes and freedom to attend. The current chaplain Rev Dr Nevsky Everett continues this legacy. He arrived in 2022. He’s passionate about Romania its language and culture.
