“The Heart of Brazoria County.” That’s Angleton’s nickname. Angleton earned this title as the proud county seat of Brazoria County. Right now, you might be wondering how it got that name. Well, picture a bustling town in 1890, a place full of ambition and the promise of a bright future. The story goes that the city was named for the wife of the general manager of the Velasco Terminal Railway: Angleton. It seems she captured hearts just as surely as the town captured a central place in the county’s history. Angleton wasn’t always destined for this honor. A fierce rivalry simmered between Angleton and nearby Brazoria. Both towns vied for the coveted title of county seat. In 1896, Angleton emerged victorious. This victory solidified its standing. But the battle wasn’t truly over. Angleton had to defend its position in a county-wide election in 1913. And defend it, it did. Angleton held onto its county seat title with pride. This spirit, this dedication to its role at the heart of things, continues to define Angleton today.
