Founded in 1888 Angelica Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It began as a small gathering of 29 Swedish immigrants. Pastor Johannes Telleen led them. They established the first outpost of Swedish Lutheranism in Southern California. Their initial meeting place was at 10th and Grand Street. A second location followed nearby on Hope and 17th.

Angelica Lutheran Church’s current home on Burlington Avenue is quite different. It reflects a significant shift in the surrounding area. Built in 1925 its English-influenced Gothic revival style is striking. The stained-glass windows are works of art from a Los Angeles studio. The Last Supper carved in Germany resides in the chancel. The church is situated within the original 1781 Pueblo de Los Angeles borders. It sits in what was once the Westlake District a popular suburb for European immigrants. The area provided easy streetcar access to the city center.

Over time the neighborhood transformed. Mexican-American immigrants moved into the Westlake District. This suburb evolved into an urban center now known as Pico Union. It is a vibrant mix of cultures. Central and South American European Cuban and Asian populations call Pico Union home. Angelica Lutheran Church has adapted and grown with the community.

During the 1980s Angelica played a vital role in the LA Sanctuary Movement. The church offered crucial support to immigrants. They provided citizenship and English classes along with housing. After the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest Angelica joined with other ELCA Lutheran congregations. They formed New City Parish a non-profit urban coalition dedicated to community transformation.

Today Angelica continues to serve. It offers cultural enrichment early childhood support and emergency services. The church is a place where people of faith come together. The Word has been preached here in Swedish Spanish Korean indigenous languages of Central and South America and English. Angelica Lutheran Church is more than a building. It is a living testament to faith resilience and community in the heart of Los Angeles.
