“Founded in 1887.” These are the words that echo as we stand before the Angelic Baptist Church. It started humbly. Rev. John T. Thornton and a small group met in Deacon Harry Thompson’s home. His home was on Randolph Avenue in Jersey City.

As the Angelic Baptist Church grew, they moved to Salter’s Hall. This was still in Jersey City. Soon after, they found their permanent home. It is at 9-11 East 46th Street in Bayonne, New Jersey.

Pastor Motley from Salem Baptist Church helped set apart the Angelic Baptist Church. Salem Baptist Church was on Union Street in Jersey City. Rev. Thornton led the church through many changes. He was pastor from 1887 to 1921.

Under Rev. Thornton’s leadership, the Angelic Baptist Church renovated its building. A lower-level dining area was added. The choir stand moved to the front.

From 1922 to 1980, Angelic Baptist Church had several pastors. These included Rev. T.J. Jenkins, Rev. J.A. Meyers and Rev. C. H. Church, Sr. Also serving were Rev. Blackwell, Rev. W. A. Lee and Rev. R. Caddell. Rev. Karry, Rev. L. Battle and Rev. W.O. Reynolds also served.

In 1980, Rev. Sloan Gordon, Sr. became the Senior Pastor. He brought new life to the Angelic Baptist Church. The Gospel Chorus, Nurses Unit, Flower Circle and Prayer Band were formed. The church also underwent significant renovations.

Carpeting and glass entrance doors were installed. A new PA system was added. Stained glass windows were placed throughout the church. Paneling was added in the dining area and choir room. The Angelic Baptist Church even purchased a church van. Rev. Gordon, Sr. retired in August 1999. He served from July 1980.

On August 22, 1999, Rev. Sloan Gordon, Jr. took over. He became the pastor of Angelic Baptist Church. The church has been blessed financially and spiritually. Under Pastor Gordon’s leadership, the sanctuary and fellowship hall were remodeled.

A new organ and van were purchased. A new sound system was installed. The church also got a new heating system. A new baptismal pool, roof and windows were added.

The Angelic Baptist Church plans more improvements. These include a new facelift, siding, and an elevator.

For over 130 years, the Angelic Baptist Church has stood strong. They have relied on faith and the Lord. The church is committed to building God’s Kingdom. It does this through teaching God’s Word. Souls are saved and disciples are made. These disciples engage in ministry, mission and outreach.

The Angelic Baptist Church continues to worship, serve and make disciples. It stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Remember its humble beginnings and its commitment to God’s word. The Angelic Baptist Church’s journey is far from over.
