Before this building existed, the Mathematical Institute was scattered. Lectures occurred in various colleges. Mathematicians lacked a central meeting place. In 1930, G. H. Hardy proposed a dedicated building. The university only allocated six rooms in 1934. A dedicated building finally opened in 1966. This was located at the northern end of St Giles’. The institute soon outgrew this space. It expanded into neighboring houses and annexes.

The Andrew Wiles Building became a reality in 2013. It is located in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter. The building’s design integrates mathematical ideas. Sir Roger Penrose created a non-periodic Penrose tiling. This tiling decorates the ground at the entrance. Two structures use crystals to illustrate graph theory concepts. These crystals also demonstrate the vibration of a two-dimensional surface.

The system was designed to allow future buildings to share energy.

Inside, the Andrew Wiles Building is equipped with advanced technology. Teaching rooms feature Christie projectors. These projectors display superior color images. Some rooms are linked. This allows lectures to be shared remotely. The system is interactive in both directions.

GV Multimedia handled the design and installation. The building serves 900 undergraduates. It provides workspace for over 500 researchers and support staff. The lecture theaters benefit the entire university.

The audio-visual component spans 13 teaching spaces and six meeting rooms. This includes three fully equipped lecture theaters. These theaters have raked seating. An Extron XTP matrix switcher links the lecture theaters. This allows larger rooms to transmit lectures to other rooms.

The Andrew Wiles Building also houses the Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics. This center was established with a US$25 million grant. It was the largest grant ever for a UK mathematics department.

In 2015, the building was featured in the TV series Lewis. Sir Andrew Wiles even appeared in the background of one scene.
