Classical guitar breathes through this plaque. This is the ANDRÉS SEGOVIA Plaque. It commemorates a life devoted to music. It marks the place where the maestro spent his final years.

Andrés Segovia was born in Linares Spain in 1893. He died in Madrid in 1987. Segovia elevated the guitar to a concert instrument. Before him the guitar was seen as a mere parlor instrument. Segovia changed that perception. He showed the world the guitar’s expressive possibilities.

Segovia began playing at age 16. His family discouraged him. They wanted him to become a lawyer. Despite this Segovia pursued his passion. He gave his first public performance in Granada in 1909. A few years later he played in Madrid.

Segovia’s technique was unique. He plucked the strings with his nails. This gave the guitar a distinct sound. He sought tension in the strings. This created a strong and voluminous sound.

Segovia’s repertoire was vast. It included contemporary works. Composers wrote pieces specifically for him. He transcribed classical works. These were originally for other instruments. He also played traditional guitar pieces. Segovia enlarged the guitar repertoire.

Segovia met many composers. Alexandre Tansman wrote guitar works for him. Manuel Ponce wrote sonatas. Heitor Villa-Lobos composed twelve études. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote a guitar concerto.

Segovia’s influence is still felt today. Many guitarists are students of Segovia. Others are students of his students. He left behind many edited works. He transcribed Bach’s Chaconne for guitar.

Segovia received many awards. King Juan Carlos I ennobled him. He became the Marquis of Salobreña. Segovia won a Grammy Award. He also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Segovia continued to perform into old age. Two films were made about his life. He is buried in Linares. The ANDRÉS SEGOVIA Plaque is a tribute to his legacy. It honors his contribution to music.

Consider the notes that once filled the air around this place. Imagine the dedication and passion of Andrés Segovia. He made the guitar sing. This ANDRÉS SEGOVIA Plaque reminds us of his lasting influence. It’s a small marker for a musical giant.
