Founded in 1924 the Anderson Memorial Church of God in Christ stands as a testament to enduring faith. Originally named the North Detroit Church of God in Christ it began under the leadership of Elder J L Conner. The congregation moved to 12925 Orleans Street adopting a new name Orleans Street Church of God in Christ. Elder Conner served until 1933. Then Elder T C Morris led for six years. The church faced challenges until Bishop C L Anderson Sr arrived.
Under Bishop Anderson Sr the church flourished. Its name changed again becoming Anderson Temple Church of God in Christ. His leadership marked a period of significant growth and expansion. He served until his death in 1959. His son Bishop C L Anderson Jr succeeded him. Continuing his father’s legacy Bishop Anderson Jr oversaw further growth culminating in the construction of a new church building. This marked the final name change to Anderson Memorial Church of God in Christ honoring his father’s contribution. He led until 1999.
Following Bishop Anderson Jr’s passing the church experienced more difficult times. Elder Tyrone L Anderson his son briefly led. Then Bishop Walter E Bogan Sr served as interim pastor. Finally Bishop Clifford C Dunlap took over as interim pastor from 2006 to December 5 2007. On that day Superintendent Charles J Johnson III was appointed the eighth pastor. He embraced the challenge rebuilding the congregation. He saw it as a new beginning for Anderson Memorial The Church on the Rock. The church’s history reflects resilience a commitment to faith and a legacy of leadership passed down through generations. The Anderson Memorial Church of God in Christ stands as a beacon of hope and spiritual strength in Detroit. It continues to serve the community a testament to its enduring legacy.
