In 1865, a new arrival graced Lille’s landscape: the Ancienne Gare Saint-Sauveur. Originally conceived as a freight station, the Ancienne Gare played a vital role in the city’s expanding trade network. Situated just south of Lille’s old city walls, in the burgeoning Saint-Sauveur district, its construction coincided with a period of significant growth for Lille. The city had recently annexed surrounding towns, leaving ample space for development. This expansion paved the way for the Ancienne Gare and a network of new railway lines. Interestingly, engineers initially envisioned the Ancienne Gare as Lille’s central station, serving both passengers and freight. However, its location, perceived as distant from the city center at the time, led to its designation as a goods-only terminal. Over the years, the Ancienne Gare witnessed Lille’s industrial transformation. In 1867, additional tracks and a customs office were added. By 1880, its platform expanded, equipped with new machinery for handling wagons. The Ancienne Gare even housed a major intermodal transport terminal, complete with transhipment gantries. This terminal remained a hub of activity until the early 1990s when it began to reach its capacity limits. The year 2003 marked the end of an era for the Ancienne Gare. With the opening of the Delta 3 multimodal platform in Dourges, the station’s railway operations ceased. Left behind was a vast 20-hectare site, ripe for transformation. While the 2004 Olympic bid, proposing the Ancienne Gare’s demolition and replacement with an Olympic village, fell through, a new chapter began in 2009. Two of the station’s halls underwent renovations for Lille 3000 events. Hall A, a 19th-century structure, now houses a bar, restaurant, and cinema. Hall B, rebuilt in the 1920s, has become a space for exhibitions and events. Today, the Ancienne Gare Saint-Sauveur stands as a testament to Lille’s industrial past and its vibrant cultural present. From freight trains to art exhibitions, its story reflects the city’s continuous evolution.
