Rumor has it this land once echoed with roars and squawks. This is where the Ancien Zoo of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat stood. Imagine a time before luxury villas. A time when the scent of exotic animals filled the air instead of designer perfume.

The Ancien Zoo wasn’t just any zoo. It was a vibrant hub on the French Riviera. It opened its gates in 1950. Visitors marveled at lions tigers and zebras. Even more unusual animals like penguins and wallabies called this place home. There were approximately 500 animals.

Sadly its story is tinged with melancholy. The zoo closed in 2009. Its inhabitants were dispersed to other zoos. Some were lucky others were not. The fate of many animals remains unknown. A rich Russian businessman bought the land. He demolished the zoo structures. A large villa now sits where the animals once roamed.

The legacy of the Ancien Zoo however remains. It’s a reminder of a bygone era. A time when the French Riviera was wilder more untamed. A story whispered through the stones. A story of animals laughter and ultimately sadness. This quiet spot holds a poignant story. A story of a zoo that once was. And a stark reminder of changing times. It serves as a reminder to appreciate the beauty and fragility of life itself. We stand here today on hallowed ground. The ground of this lost paradise.
