Was this grand palace always destined to be apartments? The Ancien Hôtel Bristol, once a beacon of Belle Époque luxury, stands before you, now a collection of private residences. Imagine its inauguration in January 1899. A sprawling curved design over 150 meters long, adorned with white facades, intricate balconies, and a grand entrance fit for royalty. This was the Ancien Hôtel Bristol, a vision brought to life by Danish architect Hans-Georg Tersling, commissioned by the English financier John Blundell Maple.

The Ancien Hôtel Bristol was the epitome of opulence. It boasted 400 rooms outfitted with the most modern amenities. Guests dined in a stunning rotunda wing, bathed in heated seawater pumped directly from the Mediterranean. The hotel even housed its own theater!

This magnificence was tragically marred in 1911. A devastating fire tore through the Ancien Hôtel Bristol, destroying its top floor and signature pavilion roofs. While the sturdy cement structure survived, the Ancien Hôtel Bristol never fully recovered its former glory. The fifth and sixth floors were not rebuilt. Instead, the grand galleries that once graced the top floor were replaced with simple balconied windows.

The Ancien Hôtel Bristol finally transitioned into its current life as a luxury apartment building in 1954. While its purpose has changed, the echoes of grandeur remain in its elegant bones. Look closely at the details. The intricate sculptures, the remaining oriels, the whispers of a bygone era. The Ancien Hôtel Bristol stands as a testament to a glamorous past, interwoven with the ever-evolving story of Nice.
