Could a dried-up lake hold the key to Delhi’s past? Here at Anangtal, it certainly does. Anangtal, nestled in South Delhi, isn’t much to look at now. It’s more of a dusty field than a shimmering lake. But imagine, if you will, the year 1060 AD. Picture a vast, man-made lake, teeming with life. This was Anangtal, created by Raja Anang Pal Tomar, the founder of Delhi. Anangtal wasn’t just for show. It was a vital water source, crucial for the very survival of the city, especially during times of siege. Alauddin Khalji, centuries later, even used water from Anangtal during the construction of the Qutub Minar and the expansion of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. Anangtal whispers stories of its creator, King Anangpal II, also known as Anangpal Tomar. This Tomar king wasn’t just responsible for Anangtal. He is credited with building Lal Kot, the first city of Delhi, also known as DhillikaPuri. Anangpal II’s legacy extends beyond Delhi’s borders. He is also known as the maternal grandfather of the legendary Prithviraj Chauhan, whose own fort, Rai Pithora, is a protected monument. Anangtal’s significance has recently been reaffirmed. The Ministry of Culture declared it a monument of national importance. This declaration is a symbolic “re-coronation” of Anang Pal Singh Tomar in the heart of the city he founded. It ensures the preservation of this ancient site. Though dried up and used for cultivation now, Anangtal still holds a wealth of history. Stand here, imagine the ripples of the past, and let Anangtal tell you its story.
