On a crisp autumn day in 1952, a new street was unveiled in Hanover’s Kirchrode district. This street, An der Trift, was named after the area’s history as a grazing path for sheep. An der Trift meanders from Ostfeldstraße to Wiesenweg, crossing the former grazing grounds. The street’s name, meaning “At the Drift,” perfectly captures its pastoral past. An der Trift isn’t just a street. It is a showcase of post-war architecture. The street offers glimpses into a beautiful old orchard and some significant buildings. One architectural gem on An der Trift is number 7. This single-family home was awarded the prestigious Laves Prize in 1954. Another notable building is number 9, the “Wohnhaus Dr. Reuleaux.” This house was designed by architect Ernst Zinsser for Otto Reuleaux, the chairman of Kali Chemie, between 1951 and 1952. An der Trift, nestled near the Tiergarten, or zoological garden, offers a unique blend of history and modern design. It is a quiet reminder of Hanover’s past and a testament to its architectural innovation.
