Two majestic lions guard the entrance to the Amtsgericht Regensburg. Their stone gaze seems to watch over centuries of justice dispensed within these walls. This isn’t just any courthouse. It’s the Amtsgericht Regensburg a vital part of Regensburg’s legal and historical fabric.

The Amtsgericht Regensburg has a rich history. It wasn’t always located in its present building on Augustenstraße 3. In 1879 two separate Amtsgerichte Regensburg I and Regensburg II were formed. This was from the existing city and country courts around Regensburg. Regensburg I included the city except Stadtamhof and Steinweg which went to a different court. Regensburg II was the former country court.

The building’s story is equally fascinating. Before the current Neo-Renaissance structure stood a sugar factory. Architect Friedrich Niedermayer built the courthouse between 1901 and 1905. The main portal is adorned with allegorical figures. The grand staircase inside is flanked by more stone lions. Intricate coats of arms decorate the ceiling.

World War II damaged the east wing. It was rebuilt by 1950. Space became an issue. The court bought neighboring buildings. Residential spaces were converted into offices. Plans for a new building in Königswiesen were considered. The land registry moved to Augustenstraße 5a in 1976. That building was purchased and integrated into the complex. Ultimately a new building on Augustenstraße 3 replaced the old one. This was completed in 1987 at a cost of 17.5 million DM.

Further renovations occurred in 1990 affecting buildings on Augustenstraße 6a and Kumpfmühlerstraße 4a. This work concluded in 1997 at a cost of 16 million DM. The adjacent Augustenschule was purchased and converted. It opened in March 2004. Now it houses courtrooms and classrooms for legal trainees.

The Amtsgericht Regensburg’s jurisdiction is extensive. It covers the district of Regensburg and the city itself. The area stretches from Wörth an der Donau in the east to Schierling in the south. It goes as far west as Hemau and Beratzhausen and north to Kallmünz. About 182000 people live within its boundaries. The court handles civil family and criminal cases at the first instance. In 2010 it employed 34 judges 54 legal officers 19 bailiffs 48 judicial specialists and 51 other staff members. Herbert Roth a German legal scholar was among its judges. The Landgericht Regensburg is above it. The Oberlandesgericht Nürnberg is the highest court in the hierarchy.

The Amtsgericht Regensburg is more than a building. It’s a living testament to Regensburg’s history. It’s a place where justice unfolds day after day. It’s a place where the stories of the city intertwine with the ongoing pursuit of fairness. It’s a truly remarkable sight to behold.
