Journey back to 1857. Imagine the bustling streets of Heidelberg. The Amtsgericht Heidelberg is born. Before this, the Bezirksamt Heidelberg juggled administration and court duties. But 1857 marked a change. The Bezirksamt focused solely on administration. The Amtsgericht Heidelberg took over the legal reins. The Amtsgericht Heidelberg wasn’t just any court. It was one of 19 Amtsgerichte in Baden’s Unterrheinkreis. Two Amtsrichtern (judges), a Registrator, three Aktuar, a Gerichtsdienter, a Gefangenenwärter, and three Gerichtsvollzieher staffed this vital institution. Its jurisdiction spanned 22 communities. Its reach expanded further in 1872. The Amtsgericht Neckargemünd closed. Its responsibilities fell to the Amtsgericht Heidelberg. For decades, the Amtsgericht Heidelberg shared a home with the Landgericht and Staatsanwaltschaft. They occupied administrative buildings in the Kurfürsten-Anlage. These buildings are now gone. In 2011, the court moved to a new, modern facility. The Justizzentrum Kurfürsten-Anlage, number 15, became its new address. Today, the Amtsgericht Heidelberg stands as the largest of three Amtsgerichte. It serves the Landgericht Heidelberg district. Its jurisdiction includes Heidelberg and surrounding towns. Bammental, Dossenheim, Eberbach, and Edingen-Neckarhausen are just a few examples. It handles insolvency cases, forced sales, and foreclosures. It also manages procedures related to the Transsexuellengesetz (Transsexual Act). Further duties include matters of civil status and agriculture. These cases come from the Sinsheim and Wiesloch districts. Interestingly, some tasks fall outside its purview. The Amtsgericht Mannheim keeps the commercial register. The Amtsgericht Stuttgart handles debt collection procedures. The Amtsgericht Heidelberg, a cornerstone of Heidelberg’s legal system, continues its important work today. It carries a legacy of over a century and a half of service to the community.
