Ever wondered what stories these walls could tell? The Amtsgericht Bamberg, standing before us, isn’t just a courthouse. It’s a place where history and justice intertwine.

The Amtsgericht Bamberg has been located here on Synagogenplatz 1 since December 1995. But the story of justice on this very ground goes back much further.

Once, this site was Bamberg’s place of execution. A stone structure called Rabenstein stood here. Imagine public executions taking place where we now seek justice within the Amtsgericht Bamberg.

Later, the area transformed into a military drill ground. Soldiers marched and trained. This “Kleiner Exerzierplatz” prepared them for duty. The location then became a place of discipline. Now, the Amtsgericht Bamberg stands as a symbol of legal order.

In a profound shift, a synagogue was built here in 1910. For 28 years, it served Bamberg’s Jewish community. The foundation stone was laid in November 1908. But during the night of November 8th to 9th, 1938, it fell victim to the Nazi’s destructive Kristallnacht. In 1939, the remnants were blown up. This site, now home to the Amtsgericht Bamberg, carries the weight of that loss.

After the war, the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse Bamberg acquired the land. They built an administrative building here in 1954 and 1955.

Finally, in 1986, the Free State of Bavaria purchased the property. Their vision was to establish the Amtsgericht Bamberg. The building required significant renovations. It had stood empty for years and was in poor condition.

Construction began in 1990. The Amtsgericht Bamberg finally opened its doors in December 1995.

Today, the Amtsgericht Bamberg serves Bamberg and the surrounding district. It is one of 18 district courts within the Bamberg Higher Regional Court district. The district court of Bamberg is the higher court. The Higher Regional Court of Bamberg is the responsible Higher Regional Court.

As you leave the Amtsgericht Bamberg, consider the layers of history beneath your feet. From execution ground to drill field, from synagogue to courthouse, this place has witnessed profound changes. It reminds us that even in the pursuit of justice, the echoes of the past are always present.
