Beneath the shadow of the Twin Towers, a serene world awaits at the Ampang Mituoyan Temple. This temple offers an oasis of calm amid Kuala Lumpur’s busiest street, Jalan Ampang. Imagine passing by countless times without noticing this hidden gem.

Once you step inside the traditional Chinese gateway you leave the city behind. The Ampang Mituoyan Temple has a rich history. A temple has stood on this site since 1880. It was originally known as Deng Bi An Temple.

In 1993, the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association took over. Venerable Master Hsuan Hua founded this group in 1959. It has a strong following in the USA and Taiwan. After extensive renovations, it reopened in 2006 as Kun Yam Thong Temple. The name means Guan Yin’s Hall. It honors the Goddess of Mercy.

Inside the Ampang Mituoyan Temple, a statue of Guan Yin captivates visitors. It features 1000 arms and 1000 eyes. More formally, the temple is also known as the Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery. Look for the small statue of Zhunti Bodhisattva. It stands in front of the giant Guan Yin. This treasure comes from the original Deng Bi An Temple.

The Great Jewelled Hall is a highlight of the Ampang Mituoyan Temple. It measures 100 feet long and 70 feet wide. Inside, find a peaceful space dominated by a giant altar. Three golden Buddha statues sit atop the altar. Each weighs a ton. They represent Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Master Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha.

Another notable statue is the gilded Earth Store Bodhisattva. It was crafted in Putian in China’s Fujian Province. At the rear of the temple, a 500-seat dining area welcomes visitors. Enjoy low-priced healthy vegetarian lunches here. The self-service restaurant avoids MSG. It’s a popular spot for business people and tourists alike. Meals cost around RM5 to RM10. On the 1st and 15th days of each lunar month the Ampang Mituoyan Temple serves free food to the needy from 7.30am to 2.30pm.

The temple also houses a library and bookstore. You can take some books in exchange for a donation. A visit to the Ampang Mituoyan Temple is free. Donation boxes allow you to show your appreciation. Take a moment to find peace and beauty in this unique sanctuary.
