Giant spiral stone. What secrets does this sculpture of the Ammonit hold? This isn’t just any fossil replica. The Ammonit represents a creature from the Upper Cretaceous period. Picture this. About 72 million years ago, these giants swam in the seas.
The original Parapuzosia seppenradensis is the largest known Ammonit. It’s a true testament to the wonders of natural history. The actual fossil resides at the LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster. There, it earned the title of Fossil of the Year in 2008.
Let’s travel back to 1895. A quarry worker in Seppenrade made an incredible discovery. He unearthed a massive stone core of an Ammonit. This discovery measured 174.2 centimeters in diameter. It weighed roughly 3.5 tons. Hermann Landois, a zoology professor, scientifically described the find. He named it Pachydiscus seppenradensis. Later, in 1913, Nowak reclassified it into the genus Parapuzosia.
But that wasn’t the first find. Back in 1887, another, smaller specimen emerged. This one measured 136.2 centimeters. Both were from the same Seppenrade quarry. Imagine the excitement rippling through the scientific community.
The original Ammonit had a difficult journey. During its excavation, the fossil broke into seven pieces. They were carefully reassembled later. Landois bought it for the Provincial Museum for 125 gold marks. It was transported to the old Natural History Museum. In 1980, it moved to the new LWL Museum.
Why did these Ammonites grow so large? Scientists believe giantism offered advantages. It meant a longer life and defense against predators. The sheer size of Parapuzosia seppenradensis meant few creatures dared to attack.
These giants lived in shallower waters. This contrasts with today’s giant squids. They thrive exclusively in the deep sea. The growth may be connected to the increase in size of Mosasaurs. Mosasaurs were apex predators in the Cretaceous seas.
Fossil finds of Parapuzosia seppenradensis are rare. So their evolutionary history remains mysterious. But recent studies shed light on these giants. Christina Ifrim and her team compared 154 Parapuzosia specimens. They came from Europe and Mexico. They analyzed shell dimensions, growth stages, and geographical distribution.
The earliest forms of Parapuzosia seppenradensis lived 83 million years ago. They dwelled on both sides of the Atlantic. Their ancestors, Parapuzosia leptophylla, initially lived only in Europe. Later, they spread to the Gulf of Mexico.
Interestingly, fossils often clustered. They consisted only of adult specimens in limited areas. Nearby areas yielded nothing. Scientists think this indicates a unique reproductive strategy. The species reproduced sexually only once before dying.
