Five acres of shade greet you. Welcome to Amir’s Garden Picnic Site. This isn’t just any picnic spot. It’s a testament to one man’s unwavering dedication. Amir Dialameh an Iranian immigrant transformed a barren hillside scarred by fire into this tranquil oasis.
Amir’s Garden Picnic Site began in 1971. A devastating brush fire had left the area desolate. Amir saw ugliness. He decided to act. He obtained permission from city officials. Then he began his remarkable journey. For over three decades Amir worked tirelessly. He used only a pick and shovel. He cleared 200 charred tree stumps. He built retaining walls from discarded fencing.
He planted hundreds of trees and shrubs. Jacaranda trees rose bushes geraniums oleander and yucca now thrive. Amir’s vision was simple. He wanted a beautiful rest stop for hikers. He understood the pressures of city life. He believed people needed a place to escape.
His love for nature stemmed from childhood hikes in Iran’s Alborz Mountains. He carried that love to America. He found inspiration in American volunteerism. He believed in giving back to his community. Amir’s Garden Picnic Site is a stunning example of this belief.
He worked six or seven days a week. He terraced slopes. He built stairs. He even painted bright patterns on wooden benches. He balanced this work with his job as a wine expert. He faced challenges. Plants were stolen. Saplings were destroyed. He was even robbed and beaten. Yet he persevered. Two major brush fires further tested his resolve. He patiently restored the damaged areas. Amir’s spirit was unbreakable.
