“Amigos” whispers the name a promise in Spanish. Amigos School stands before you a testament to bilingual education. This isn’t just any school. It’s a vibrant hub where Spanish and English dance together. Imagine its journey starting as a small Spanish immersion program in 1986 at the Maynard School. It blossomed growing beyond its space. K-3 students learned at Maynard while grades 4-8 found a home at Robert F Kennedy School. The 1990s saw its expansion eventually uniting all grades at Kennedy. A pivotal moment arrived in 2001. The Cambridge School Committee voted to make it an independent school. Marla Pérez-Selles a key figure in Cambridge’s bilingual program became its first principal. More growth followed. Bilingual students from Longfellow School joined the Amigos family in 2002. The School Consolidation Plan of 2003-04 led to a move to the King School building. Finally in 2012 a move to 15 Upton Street its current location. Today Amigos School is a unique K-8 school. It’s a place where students become bilingual and biliterate. They develop cross-cultural understanding. Families share their heritage. The school thrives on community involvement. Harvard’s CityStep program brings students weekly readers. After-school programs enrich the lives of students and the wider community. Science clubs gardens and the School of Honk are among many activities.
