What secrets does Amfithea hold? Amfithea, a neighborhood nestled within Palaio Faliro, whispers tales of transformation. Once, this area, part of a larger region simply known as Faliro, was a tranquil expanse of farmlands. Fields of wheat, barley, and oats stretched towards the horizon, punctuated by vineyards and the occasional farmhouse. The residents, primarily farmers, shepherds, and stockbreeders, lived a life intertwined with the rhythms of nature. Amfithea, before it even bore that name, held a piece of this quiet, agrarian past. In 1883, the quiet was broken by the arrival of the “Horse-ridden Railway,” connecting Faliro to Athens and ushering in an era of change. This simple transportation line, later upgraded to steam and then electric, marked the beginning of Faliro’s integration with the bustling capital. This connection spurred development, drawing wealthy families to the area’s natural beauty. Grand mansions and villas began to rise along the coastline, transforming the landscape. Amfithea itself, then known as Vourlopotamos, witnessed this shift firsthand. The name “Amfithea” officially appeared in 1925, marking a new chapter in the neighborhood’s story. The transformation continued as Palaio Faliro, encompassing Amfithea, officially became a municipality in 1942. This administrative change solidified the area’s growing importance, and post-war development saw even more families, including a vibrant community of Greeks from Istanbul, settling in Amfithea and the surrounding areas. Amfithea stands as a testament to this fascinating evolution, a quiet neighborhood bearing witness to Palaio Faliro’s journey from rural tranquility to a sought-after suburb of Athens.
