At the edge of the Pacific, a bronze testament to sacrifice stands tall. The American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial, a poignant reminder of the often-unsung heroes of the sea. This memorial, the first of its kind in the nation, honors the merchant mariners who served, often unseen, in times of both war and peace. The American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1989, a project spearheaded by the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial Committee. The committee’s vision took root in 1976. The city of San Pedro generously donated the land. The committee then rallied support, raising funds primarily from private donors to bring the memorial to life. The centerpiece of the memorial is a striking bronze statue. It depicts two merchant seamen ascending a Jacob’s Ladder after a daring rescue at sea. The sculptor, Jasper D’Ambrosi, tragically passed away in 1986 before completing the final model. His sons, Marc and Michael, stepped in to finish their father’s work, a tribute to his legacy. The statue was cast at Arizona Bronze in 1987. In 2003, five black granite “Walls of Honor” were added to the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial. These walls bear the names of those who died in service, were lost at sea, or endured the hardships of being a prisoner of war. During World War II, these mariners faced immense peril, often sailing through dangerous waters. Many were young boys, too young to enlist in the military, but driven by patriotism. The casualty rate among merchant mariners during WWII was staggering. Close to four percent, 6,795 out of 215,000, perished, the highest of any service. Every year, on May 22nd, National Maritime Day, a solemn observance is held at the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial. It is a day to remember and honor the sacrifices made by these brave men and women of the sea. Their dedication ensured that vital supplies and personnel reached their destinations. They kept the lifeline of the nation open, even in the face of grave danger. The American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial serves as a lasting tribute to their courage and unwavering commitment.
