American Jewish University formed in 2007. It was the result of a merger. The University of Judaism and Brandeis-Bardin Institute joined forces. This union created a stronger institution.

The University of Judaism has a rich history. It was founded in 1947. Mordecai Kaplan was its spiritual founder. He envisioned an institution representing diverse Jewish expressions. Rabbi Jacob Pressman co-founded it. The UJ became independent in the 1970s.

Initially, the UJ was connected to New York’s Jewish Theological Seminary. It also had ties to the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Los Angeles. Robert Wexler became president in 1992. He made it officially non-denominational. Jeffrey Herbst is the current president, taking office in 2018.

American Jewish University has several campuses. The Familian campus in Bel Air was sold in 2024. However, AJU maintains administrative offices there for a few more years. The Brandeis-Bardin campus is in Simi Valley. It houses Camp Alonim and the BCI Program. The Ziegler Campus is located in Beverly Hills.

The university offers diverse academic programs. The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies trains Conservative rabbis. The Masor School for Jewish Education and Leadership offers degrees in early childhood education.

American Jewish University’s Whizin Center provides continuing education. It offers classes in languages, Jewish studies, and arts. The Public Lecture Series once hosted prominent figures. Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger were among the speakers.

The American Jewish University is more than just a school. It’s a center for Jewish life. It welcomes people of all backgrounds. It provides the tools to deepen Jewish wisdom.
