Completed in 1983, the America Tower stands tall at 590 feet. It graces Houston’s skyline with its 42 floors of steel and glass. This impressive structure is more than just a skyscraper. America Tower has played a pivotal role in Houston’s history, housing major corporations and witnessing significant events. The America Tower was once the headquarters of Continental Airlines. This began in 1983. The airline called this tower home until 1998, when it moved to Downtown Houston. Why the move? Continental’s president, Stephen M. Wolf, stated that Houston had become the airline’s biggest hub. It made sense to be closer to the heart of the action. Even before Continental Airlines, the America Tower housed the headquarters of Texas Air Corporation during the 1980s. The America Tower isn’t just about airlines. Today, it serves as the headquarters for Baker Hughes. It also houses offices for AIG American General and BDO USA, LLP. The America Tower is actually part of a larger complex called the American General Center. This complex also includes the Life Building, Wortham Tower, Woodson Tower (also known as the Liberty Tower), and the Riviana Building. Each building adds to the rich tapestry of the area. In 1998, Andersen Consulting, now known as Accenture, consolidated its workforce into the America Tower. Over 1,100 employees moved into the space. This significant influx of workers highlighted the tower’s prominent role in the business landscape of Houston.
