In 2009, the landscape here was dramatically different. The original double bridge built in 1965 no longer met the demands of increased traffic and shipping. The six-lane expansion of the A1 motorway between Münster and Osnabrück, coupled with the widening of the Dortmund-Ems Canal, necessitated a complete overhaul. The old steel structures each 81 meters long and 30.5 meters wide were showing their age. They lacked sufficient load-bearing capacity and provided inadequate clearance for ships.
The decision was made to replace them with something modern and efficient. The original bridges were carefully dismantled. In their place arose two new bridges. These bridges are designed as tied-arch bridges with concrete roadway slabs. A key improvement was raising the clearance for ships from 4.5 meters to 5.3 meters. The length remained at 81 meters, but the overall width increased to 37 meters.
Before being lifted into place, the new bridge superstructures were assembled on a nearby parking lot. Imagine the scale of this operation. Each section weighed a staggering 760 tons. A self-propelled transport vehicle carefully moved them to the canal. Then using a pontoon, the bridge sections were floated across the water and precisely positioned on their abutments. The Amelsbürener-Brücke now stands as a testament to ingenuity.
The Amelsbürener-Brücke spans from the western to the eastern abutments. It stands without the need for intermediate supports. The four blue steel arches are simple and elegant. They have become a recognizable landmark visible from afar. After a year of construction, the bridge was opened in 2010. Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW and the engineering firms Schürmann Kindmann und Partner and Lindschulte Ingenieurgesellschaft planned it.
