Originally called Independence House, it served as the residence of the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia. Can you imagine the tension here, especially during Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965? The then-Governor, Sir Humphrey Gibbs, refused to leave, asserting his legal authority. This standoff with Ian Smith, the Prime Minister at the time, is a powerful symbol of the political turmoil of that era. Later, the building was even renamed Dzimbahwe, meaning “House of Chiefs” in Shona, under Prime Minister Abel Muzorewa. And though it’s gone through many changes over the years, standing here today, one can’t help but feel the weight of history within Ambassador House’s walls.
