“The air thrums with festivity, doesn’t it?” The sweet, yeasty scent of bolos de São Gonçalo wafts through the air of Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena, Cepelos e Gatão. It’s almost impossible to resist their phallic shape, a tradition that raises eyebrows and sparks laughter. But beneath the lighthearted exchange lies a deeper connection to São Gonçalo, the matchmaker saint. Our parish, Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena, Cepelos e Gatão, thrives on these traditions. The spirit of São Gonçalo, the one who built the first bridge across the Tâmega, still lingers. It’s no coincidence our most iconic landmark, the Ponte de São Gonçalo, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Imagine the year 1809. French troops, led by Marshal Soult, are met with fierce resistance right here. For fourteen days, the people of Amarante held strong, their courage echoing across the centuries. Sadly, the French ultimately prevailed, setting fire to homes in their wake. Yet, from the ashes, Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena, Cepelos e Gatão rose, its spirit unbroken, much like the bridge that binds us. Our June festival bursts with color and life. It’s a time to celebrate our patron saint, to revel in hope, and maybe even find love with a cheeky wink and a cake.
