Across the Uji River, the Amagase Dam stands as a testament to human ingenuity. The Amagase Dam isn’t just a concrete barrier. It’s a multipurpose marvel completed in 1964. It elegantly combines flood control, power generation, and water supply preservation. The dam’s construction began in 1955, culminating in its completion in 1964. The Amagase Dam is an arch dam, specifically a variable-radius arch type. It stands 73 meters tall and stretches 254 meters long. This impressive structure holds back a reservoir known as Lake Hōō. This “Lake Phoenix” shimmers with the changing colors of the seasons. The name comes from the shape resembling a phoenix spreading its wings, a symbol of hope and the creation of a paradise on earth. This reservoir, created by the dam, has a total capacity of 26,280,000 cubic meters. Of this, 20,000,000 cubic meters are actively used for various purposes. The dam’s power station alone has an installed capacity of 92 MW. The Amagase Dam also serves as the lower reservoir for the Kisenyama Pumped Storage Plant. This plant, completed in 1970, boasts a capacity of 466 MW. This impressive feat of engineering provides essential power during peak usage periods. Imagine the power of the water surging through the dam, generating electricity for countless homes and businesses. Both the Amagase Dam and the pumped-storage plant are operated by the Kansai Electric Power Company. They represent a harmonious blend of functionality and ingenuity. The Amagase Dam stands as a silent guardian, protecting the region from floods. It provides a vital water supply and generates clean energy, a symbol of human innovation in harmony with nature.
