Picture the sprawling green expanse before you. This is Am Hallo Park in Essen. A place steeped in history a green heart beating within the city’s industrial past.

Am Hallo Park’s story begins long ago on the slopes of the Hallo hill. Here stood the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Tower a majestic neo-Gothic structure. Dedicated in 1899 it was a four-story lookout tower named after Kaiser Wilhelm I. Inside housed a small museum showcasing Prussian-German history and a collection of weaponry. Sadly the tower suffered significant damage in World War II and was never rebuilt. The museum’s contents vanished their whereabouts lost to time. Only a haunting melody remains the Halloturm-March a tune composed especially for the tower.

But Am Hallo Park is more than just a lost tower. Near the tower stood a delightful inn with a beautiful Art Nouveau ballroom. Today the park sprawls over thirty hectares a vast green space. It’s home to Essen’s largest contiguous lawn a breathtaking 33000 square meters of uninterrupted green. The park boasts mature trees creating a canopy of shade and tranquility. It also includes several playgrounds. A small pond nestled within the park is the source of the Schwarzbach stream. Even model aircraft enthusiasts will find a small airfield for their hobby within the park’s eastern section.

Am Hallo Park holds another significant historical marker. The Stone of the Republic stands proudly at the park’s south entrance a monument dedicated in 1929. It bears the images of three key figures in the Weimar Republic: Matthias Erzberger Friedrich Ebert and Walther Rathenau. Their faces etched in stone serve as a poignant reminder of a pivotal era in German history.
