Am Birkenwäldchen began as a small private grove of birches. Imagine its peaceful solitude in the 1920s and 30s. New housing was springing up. Görlitz expanded towards Rauschwalde. People walked through fields and meadows to reach this newly incorporated area.
After the Second World War housing was desperately needed. Am Birkenwäldchen’s agricultural land transformed. Extensive residential buildings rose. The birch grove became a public green space. The transformation was a direct response to urgent needs. It showcases the city’s determination.
The park’s expansion began in the late 1950s. Görlitz’s garden director Henry Kraft designed its makeover. Görlitz citizens contributed significantly. They volunteered their time and labor. Their efforts were part of the National Aufbauwerk (NAW). They used simple tools. They completed earthworks and transportation. Their dedication shaped Am Birkenwäldchen’s character.
Today Am Birkenwäldchen is a varied park. It features a planted pond. There is a large lawn and flowerbeds. Different types of shrubs and trees frame the area. The diverse plantings create a vibrant setting.
The playground’s redesign in 2010 is a remarkable addition. Inspired by the existing trees the landscape architecture firm Krüger from Dresden created a unique theme: animal hiding places. They worked with ZIMMER & Obst. Together they crafted distinct areas. Each area represents an animal habitat.
The “Storchennest” or stork’s nest is a climbing tower. The “Huderkuhle” or badger’s den features bird claw shaped sand tables. The “Bärenhöhle” or bear’s cave offers a platform a slide and climbing opportunities. Small huts provide shelter and hiding spots. The playground blends creativity and imagination.
