Tucked away in the heart of Los Angeles, Alvarado Church of Christ stands as a testament to faith and community. Alvarado Church of Christ has a rich history, though not always in its current location. Our journey begins not amidst the bustling city, but in a humble tabernacle a few blocks from the town square. A small group of ten devout Christians, seeking fellowship and spiritual growth, formed the foundation of what would become Alvarado Church of Christ. They moved from the tabernacle to various locations, finally holding Sunday services in a movie theater around 1927. A significant step occurred in 1928 when the congregation purchased a parking lot from Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Kinman. That summer, a tent revival meeting took place on this very spot, foreshadowing the church’s future. In 1929, with the support of neighboring churches like Central in Cleburne, Rio Vista, Joshua, and Venus, the first wooden church building was erected on the Kinman lot. The church grew, adding two classrooms in 1952 and three more soon after. By 1962, the growing congregation needed a larger space. The decision was made to build a new brick church. The new Alvarado Church of Christ opened its doors on April 19, 1963. The church continued to grow and thrive. Another building campaign, “The Tie that Binds,” concluded on May 7, 1995. The goal was a new building near Highway 67. Construction started on January 2, 2000. By September of that year, the Alvarado Church of Christ congregation held services in their new auditorium. This is the building we stand before today. Alvarado Church of Christ’s journey from a small group in a tabernacle to a thriving congregation in this beautiful building is a testament to their enduring faith and commitment.
