“A beacon against the darkness,” the old fisherman said, nodding towards Alto do Facho. We stand now where those fires once blazed, atop the highest point of Porto Santo. Alto do Facho, Peak of the Torch. The name itself speaks of its history. Can you imagine standing here centuries ago, the wind whipping at your cloaks as you scanned the horizon? Out there, a pirate ship, a Jolly Roger, strikes fear into the hearts of sailors. But here on Alto do Facho, vigilance was the watchword. When a pirate ship was spotted, a bonfire roared to life, a fiery beacon visible from the easternmost tip of Madeira. From peak to peak, the message spread, a chain of fire culminating in Funchal, giving the capital precious time to prepare. Today, the fires are gone, replaced by the whispers of the wind and the breathtaking panoramic views of Porto Santo. Yet, the legacy of vigilance remains, etched into the very name of Alto do Facho, a silent guardian against the shadows of the past.
