This Altländer Prunkpforte one of many in the Altes Land. These ornate gates are iconic. They represent the craftsmanship and wealth of the Altes Land’s inhabitants. They are known as “Ollanner Puurten” in Low German. This reflects the region’s Dutch heritage. The Altes Land was originally settled by Dutch colonists.
The oldest and most splendid of these Altländer Prunkpforten are found in Neuenfelde. That’s in Hamburg’s Altes Land. They were built at the end of the 17th century. This coincides with the time Arp Schnitger lived there. Schnitger was a famous organ builder. Legend says his journeymen crafted the first Prunkpforten. The gate of Buxtehude’s Old Monastery may have served as inspiration. Another Hamburg craftsman Christian Precht was also involved. He created the St Pankratius Church’s interior in 1683.
Each Altländer Prunkpforte has a unique design. However their construction is similar. All have a large opening for wagons. There’s also a smaller opening for pedestrians. A thatched or tiled roof protects the sturdy oak frame. This frame rests on three brick foundations.
The main gateway is usually spanned by an arch. This arch might be round or pointed. It’s beautifully carved and decorated. The smaller pedestrian door is topped with columns. The Prunkpforten were copied throughout the Altes Land. They continue to be built even today. But the Prunkpforte at the Rieper Farm in Osterjork is different. It has three openings and lacks palings.
