Nestled in the heart of Kronberg, the Altkönigschule stands as a testament to time and education. But did you know its story began not in grand halls, but in a cozy inn? In 1887, Karl Balzauweit had a vision. He founded the “Concessioned Higher Boys’ and Girls’ School,” a place where young minds could flourish. The Altkönigschule initially welcomed 48 eager students, each family paying 100 gold marks annually for the privilege. Imagine those first classes, held within the walls of the “Zum Adler” inn, a building that still stands today, a silent observer of the school’s humble beginnings. By 1890, the school had outgrown its inn-turned-classroom and moved into its own dedicated building. The Altkönigschule continued to grow, becoming a cornerstone of the community. The current building, a modern structure on the Heide, opened its doors in 1975. During the 1980s, the Altkönigschule’s student population swelled, reaching nearly 1,800 students. The school underwent extensive renovations between 2007 and 2012. The Hochtaunuskreis invested 37.5 million euros in modernizing the facilities, ensuring the Altkönigschule remained a vibrant hub for learning. Now, the Altkönigschule is a Kooperative Gesamtschule. It offers Hauptschul, Realschul, and a Gymnasium branch with an upper level. The school is proudly recognized as a UNESCO project school, reflecting its commitment to global citizenship and education. The Altkönigschule is named after the nearby Altkönig mountain, a symbolic link to the region’s natural beauty and heritage. The Altkönigschule isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living, breathing entity with stories etched into its very foundation. One such story, though less celebrated, unfolded during the graduation prank of 2013. A foam generator mishap resulted in 196 students being rushed to the hospital, a stark reminder that even amidst the joy of graduation, unexpected turns can occur. From its humble origins in a local inn to its current standing as a modern, comprehensive school, the Altkönigschule continues to shape the lives of countless students. It stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring power of education.
