Centuries of stories echo within these stones. We are standing before the Altes Rathaus. It stands prominently in Salzburg’s historic district. This Old Town Hall is more than just a building. It is a treasure trove of history.

The Rococo facade of the Altes Rathaus catches your eye. It dates back to 1772. Its iconic tower rises above Rathausplatz. Since 1947, the mayor has resided at Schloss Mirabell. Yet, the Altes Rathaus remains vital. It houses a gallery. It provides meeting rooms for the city council. It safeguards the city’s oldest clock and bell.

Look closely at the outer wall of the Altes Rathaus. You will see the figure of Justitia. Carved in 1616, she symbolizes justice. It hints at the building’s past as a courthouse.

The Altes Rathaus was built in the 14th century. The city acquired it in 1407. Salzburg has had a city council since around 1370. A mayor followed shortly after. The Kheuzlturm served many purposes. Its bells signaled the nightly curfew. The tower clock kept time for the public. Tower trumpeters announced the hour. The night watchman’s calls echoed from this tower. It also sounded alarms for fires or disturbances.

Under Prince-Archbishops Matthäus Lang and Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, things changed. The mayor and town hall gradually lost influence. Over time, the building’s function evolved. Even dances were held here. This was before the Landestheater was constructed. The Altes Rathaus also provided lodgings. The city clerk, midwife and preacher all lived here.

Today, the Altes Rathaus still holds interesting features. The Hall of Pillars is on the first floor. It hosts rotating exhibitions by Salzburg artists. On the second and third floors, you’ll find council meeting rooms. Other municipal offices are also located here. The Bürgergarde keeps its weapons and uniforms on the fourth floor.

Don’t miss the Kulstrunk Panorama. It is called “The Town of Salzburg in 1916”. This exhibit is on the second floor. It is open to the public.

The Altes Rathaus has undergone many changes. In 2006, workers found walls from the 12th century. They also discovered a coin hoard from the 17th century. Salzburg’s oldest paved floor lies beneath us. It dates back to the 12th century. It is made of carefully placed stones.

A section of Salzburg’s old city wall is also visible. It dates back to the city’s first fortifications. The Altes Rathaus stands as a reminder. It reminds us of Salzburg’s long and varied history. Its walls have seen centuries of change. They continue to serve the city today.
