“This building has a story” a visitor remarked. We stand before the Altersheim & Erholungsheim St. Josef a place steeped in Berlin’s history. This isn’t just a senior care home it’s a legacy.
For many years the Altersheim & Erholungsheim St. Josef served as a vital part of the community. It provided care and comfort to generations of Berliners. Its history stretches back far beyond its current structure. A predecessor existed as St. Josefsheim a home founded in 1891.
Initially it sheltered orphans. It housed Berlin’s first chapel for the Heilige Familie parish. The building proudly displayed the words “Gehet alle zu Josef dem Vater der Armen”. This emphasized its commitment to the needy. It later transitioned to a senior care facility. This transition happened sometime between 1945 and 2019. Unfortunately due to fire safety concerns the St. Josefsheim closed in 2019.
The current Altersheim & Erholungsheim St. Josef continues this legacy of care though in a different location. Its connection to the former home is strong a testament to the enduring need for compassionate senior care in Berlin. The spirit of St. Josef lives on. It continues to offer a place of solace and support.
The alterations and expansions illustrate the changing needs of the community. The building adapted to these changes expanding in 1978 to accommodate more residents.
