Sixty-four Lechhausen residents perished. The year was 1854. Cholera swept through Augsburg. This grim statistic shaped the history of Alter Ostfriedhof.

Before you stands Alter Ostfriedhof in Augsburg. This is more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to Lechhausen’s past. It reveals a community’s evolution and its resilience in the face of tragedy. Originally a church graveyard near St Pankratius church it was outgrown by the mid-19th century. A burgeoning population needed more space. A contract was signed in 1854. It stipulated that no new crosses could be placed near the old church. Existing ones had to be removed within ten years. The last were gone by 1864. The old cemetery became a Kirchhof. A small part was given to the “Armen Schulschwestern” as a garden in 1865.

The cholera epidemic of 1854 significantly impacted the cemetery’s development. The many victims of this disease needed a place for burial. The newly established cemetery was ready for them. This is a detail often overlooked. It underlines the urgent need for a larger burial ground. The location was strategically chosen. It provided convenient access for mourners in a time before advanced transportation.

Ten years later in 1865 a Leichenhaus a mortuary was built. This building housed not only the deceased but also the Leichenwächter the cemetery keeper. His responsibilities were unique. He managed the cemetery. He rang the cemetery bell. Most fascinatingly he monitored the dead. To prevent mistaken burial of people who might still be alive the deceased’s fingers were ringed. A cord connected the rings to a bell. Any movement would signal that the person wasn’t actually dead.

The year 1892 marked another turning point. An expansion became necessary. Lechhausen’s growing Protestant population needed their own burial space. This addition reflects the changing religious landscape of the community. Before Lechhausen was part of Oberbayern it mainly had Catholic residents. The division of burial spaces reflects historical religious segregation. This expansion doubled the cemetery’s capacity for burials.

World War II inflicted significant damage. The mortuary was almost completely destroyed. The war’s impact is visible even today. Many gravestones were toppled or destroyed. Yet the community rebuilt. They restored Alter Ostfriedhof to its former dignity.

Today Alter Ostfriedhof serves as a peaceful place of remembrance. It’s a place where history and community intertwine. We remember the cholera victims. We acknowledge the religious shifts. We see the scars of war and the strength of rebuilding. This is Alter Ostfriedhof. A story in stone. A testament to life death and the enduring spirit of Lechhausen.
