Picture this: Rows of charming stone houses cling to a hillside. This is Altenhof II in Essen Germany. A testament to industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp’s social vision.

Altenhof II isn’t just a collection of houses. It’s a story etched in stone. A story of social responsibility. Built between 1907 and 1914 it offered homes to Krupp’s elderly invalid and single former employees. Rent free. This was a revolutionary act of kindness in its time.

Architect Robert Schmohl designed Altenhof II. He drew inspiration from the English garden city movement. He created a picturesque setting. The houses are varied. They are arranged in groups. This is unique. It contrasts with the stricter earlier Krupp worker housing. The result is a harmonious blend of homes and gardens. Altenhof II’s design cleverly adapts to the hilly terrain.

Later additions were made. In 1929 Oskar Haux designed a two-story apartment building. This building reflects the architectural style of the 1920s. Another expansion in 1937-38. This reflects the Heimatstil architectural style popular under National Socialism. Hans Ludwig Scharschmidt led this phase. He succeeded Schmohl as head of Krupp’s construction office.

Altenhof II survived World War II relatively intact. Most of the houses are now privately owned. However the entire settlement has been a protected landmark since November 14 1991. This includes the buildings their interiors and the surrounding streets and open spaces. Even the gas lamps were recently updated but kept in the style of the originals.

Altenhof II stands as a symbol of Krupp’s social commitment. But also a demonstration of the company’s own ambitions. It’s a beautiful harmonious community that’s worth exploring. Enjoy your visit.
