Whispers of history linger in Altenhain. This unassuming village nestled near Chemnitz holds centuries of stories. Altenhain first appeared in records in 1317. Ullrich von Ywan sold his Altenhain woodland to the Chemnitz Monastery. The name evolved from “Altenheyn” to “Aldenhayne” by 1331. Altenhain remained a farming community for centuries. It was always part of the parish of Kleinolbersdorf. This fact may surprise you. Despite its small size Altenhain had its own Methodist chapel. This adds a layer of religious diversity to the village’s history. A small Strumpffabrik a stocking factory once operated in Altenhain. Later the VEB Messtechnik an engineering firm and the VEB Gestellbau a furniture maker employed villagers. The Gasthaus Goldener Hahn the Golden Cock Inn stands proudly in Altenhain. Legend says a rooster’s crow awakened defenders during Napoleon’s invasion. This heroic bird inspired the inn’s name. The inn originally opened in 1738 as a coach stop and later included a blacksmith shop. This establishment celebrated 375 years of business in 2013. The inn is a testament to Altenhain’s enduring spirit. Altenhain became part of Chemnitz in 1997. It has retained its village charm. Altenhain’s history is etched into its landscape and its people’s memories. A walk through Altenhain is a journey through time. You can almost hear the echoes of its past.
