Gazing down Altenbekener Damm, can you hear the ghostly rumble of a train? This street, Altenbekener Damm, wasn’t always a bustling thoroughfare. It began life as a railway line. The Hanover-Altenbeken railway, opened in 1872, once carved its path right here. This very ground trembled under the weight of steam engines, carrying passengers and goods between Hanover and the town of Altenbeken. Altenbekener Damm stretches for 1.6 kilometers through the Südstadt district of Hanover. It runs almost perfectly east-west. It starts at the Maschsee lake and ends at the Lindemannallee in the Bult district. The street earned its name, Altenbekener Damm, in 1912, a few years after the railway line was rerouted. The railway’s relocation in 1909 opened up the opportunity to transform the old track bed into a road. Imagine horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles navigating this newly paved avenue. Altenbekener Damm quickly became a vital artery in the Südstadt. Along Altenbekener Damm, you’ll find a mix of historical and modern structures. Several schools, including the Bismarckschule and Tellkampfschule, stand near the Maschsee end. Further along, residential buildings from the 1920s and 1930s line the street, some even protected as historical landmarks. And don’t forget the Gilde Brewery, a local landmark that has quenched Hannover’s thirst for generations. If you venture beneath the Hildesheimer Straße, you’ll discover the Altenbekener Damm U-Bahn station. Look closely at the station’s design. You’ll find subtle nods to the Gilde Brewery, like the arches reminiscent of the brewery’s facade and Art Nouveau motifs incorporating its crest. The station serves lines 1, 2, 8 and line 18 during trade fairs, making it a crucial transportation hub. Altenbekener Damm, from railway line to bustling street, carries the echoes of Hannover’s past within its very pavement.
