Lost in the heart of Frankfurt, have you ever wondered about this magnificent building? This is the Alte Stadtbibliothek. It stands as a testament to Frankfurt’s rich history and its dedication to literature and knowledge.

The Alte Stadtbibliothek’s story began in the early 19th century. Frankfurt had just regained its independence after the Napoleonic era. The city wanted to celebrate its freedom with a grand new building. It would be a symbol of civic pride and intellectual pursuit.

Johann Friedrich Christian Hess, a local architect, was tasked with designing this important structure. Construction started in 1820 and was completed in 1825. The Alte Stadtbibliothek quickly became a jewel of the city. Its classical style graced the promenade along the Main River.

Originally, the Alte Stadtbibliothek housed not only books but also archives and a museum. The building’s facade boasted six impressive Corinthian columns. An inscription was added above the columns. It celebrated Frankfurt’s renewed freedom and dedication to learning.

Inside, a statue of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stood proudly. It was a gift from local citizens in 1834. The Alte Stadtbibliothek housed around 50,000 books. The library soon became a vital cultural hub in Frankfurt.

Over time, the library’s collection grew substantially. By the late 19th century, the Alte Stadtbibliothek needed more space. Two new wings were added to accommodate the expanding collection. By then it held over 170,000 books. This made it the second-largest city library in the German Empire.

Tragedy struck during World War II. In March 1944, bombs heavily damaged the Alte Stadtbibliothek. Most of the building was destroyed. Only the portico with its iconic columns remained standing.

After the war, discussions arose about what to do with the ruins. For years, the remaining portico stood as a memorial. In 2003, a decision was made to rebuild the Alte Stadtbibliothek. Architect Christoph Mäckler won the competition with his design.

The rebuilt Alte Stadtbibliothek is not an exact replica. The back of the building was shortened compared to the original design. Today, the Alte Stadtbibliothek is home to the Literaturhaus Frankfurt. It is a place for literary discussions and events.

The Alte Stadtbibliothek stands as a symbol of Frankfurt’s resilience. The building embodies the city’s commitment to culture. From its classical architecture to its role as a literary center, it enriches Frankfurt’s cultural landscape.
