8374 Thaler That’s how much the construction of the Alte Schule cost in 1844. This impressive building before us wasn’t always known as the Alte Schule. It began its life as the Lambertusschule a Catholic elementary school. Named after the nearby St Lambertus Church it initially resided at Stiftsplatz number 6.

The Lambertusschule outgrew its original location. The city of Dusseldorf commissioned Stadtbaumeister Bergius to build a new school. He chose a striking neo-Romanesque style. The resulting four-story structure is a testament to his vision. Notice the striking brick facade its length broken by differently sized risalits topped with triangular gables.

The building’s ornate details hint at its historical importance. See the buttresses along the edges. They are complemented by pilasters at the top. The frieze beneath the cornice features round arches and small blocks. Twirled columns with cube capitals frame the recessed entrances. Palmette and star flower motifs add to the overall decorative effect. Even small blind windows are thoughtfully included.

For over eighty years generations of children attended the Lambertusschule. Imagine the countless stories whispered within these walls. By 1888 sixteen classes housed 1115 children. The building’s history took a dark turn during the Nazi era. It served as a Hitler Youth office. After the war Dusseldorf city used it for administration. It even housed the Office for Chemical and Food Testing.

The Alte Schule’s significance was formally recognized in 1984. It received protected monument status. Recently between 2014 and 2016 extensive renovations transformed it. This beautiful old building now houses luxury condominiums. The LambertusEins as it’s now known is a stunning example of historical preservation and modern living. So stand here and reflect on this building’s rich and varied past. The Alte Schule stands as a true symbol of Dusseldorf’s heritage. A living monument to education and adaptation.
