Ever wondered what Berlin looked like nearly 800 years ago? The Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf stands as a testament to that bygone era. This church is the oldest building in the village. It offers a glimpse into the history of Mahlsdorf.

The Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf is more than just an old building. It is a symbol of resilience. It has survived wars and renovations. The church stands in its largely original condition. It is a protected historical landmark.

Construction of the Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf began before 1250. The builders used carefully hewn fieldstone blocks. Around 1230, villages started appearing near Berlin. Mahlsdorf was among them. The first documented mention of the village was in 1345.

Originally, the Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf had its entrance on the south side. During later renovations, this entrance was filled in with fieldstones. The entrance facing the tower is believed to be part of the original construction. Inside, the church saw renovations in 1897/1898 and 1925. The tower hall took its current shape in 1957.

The steeple of the Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf houses the Marienglocke. This bronze bell dates back to 1488. Its inscription reads “Mater Dei Miserere Mei.” This translates to “Mother of God, have mercy on me.” The tower itself was completed in 1593/1594. It stands 16.30 meters tall.

The interior of the Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf boasts remarkable features. The altar, acquired in 1710, features a painting of Christ and his disciples. The Kanzel, or pulpit, was installed in 1620. Hans von Kötteritz donated it. The four panels display the four Evangelists. A gilded pelican adorns the canopy.

The Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf’s windows have their own story. Originally narrow, they were widened in 1699 to let in more light. In the late 19th century, the wider windows were walled up again. Stained glass was added. Katharina Peschel, a local artist, designed the current windows in 1948.

Outside, the Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf is surrounded by a historic Kirchhof. This is a churchyard. It is the final resting place of many people connected to Mahlsdorf. The Schrobsdorff family, who contributed to Mahlsdorf’s growth, is buried here. Also, Diedrich Wattenberg rests here. He was the director of the Archenhold Observatory.

The Alte Pfarrkirche Mahlsdorf stands as a link to the past. Its stones whisper stories of survival. They echo with the voices of generations. Take a moment to appreciate this historical treasure. Consider the centuries of history held within its walls.
