Gazing upon Alte Pfarrkirche Alt-Pankow, one might initially perceive a harmonious blend of architectural styles. But look closer. The Alte Pfarrkirche Alt-Pankow whispers a tale of centuries, revealing its layered history through stone and brick. This isn’t merely one church. It’s a testament to the evolution of a community, a physical embodiment of Pankow’s growth from a small village to a part of bustling Berlin. The original fieldstone structure, dating back to the 13th century, stands as the church’s heart. Imagine the villagers gathering within its simple walls, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of nature and faith. This original sanctuary, now the choir of the expanded church, embodies the spirit of medieval Pankow. The roughly hewn fieldstones, a hallmark of the era, speak to the ingenuity of early builders. They couldn’t be laid in neat rows, creating a unique, almost organic texture. Fast forward to the mid-19th century. Pankow was expanding. The small fieldstone church could no longer accommodate the growing congregation. Enter Friedrich August Stüler, a prominent Prussian architect. In 1859, under the patronage of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, Stüler embarked on a remarkable project. Rather than demolishing the old church, he embraced it. He designed a three-aisled brick extension, creating the striking blend of old and new we see today at Alte Pfarrkirche Alt-Pankow. Two octagonal towers flank the newer section, housing the church bells. Stüler’s addition, known as the Stüler-Halle, is unique in Pankow and Brandenburg. It exemplifies the Prussian concept of “Weiterbauens am Denkmal” or “further building on the monument.” The architectural details create a visual dialogue between the fieldstone and brick sections. This fusion symbolizes the integration of Pankow’s past and present. The church also acquired its current name, “Zu den Vier Evangelisten” (Church of the Four Evangelists). A new organ, built by Carl August Buchholz, filled the expanded space with music. In the early 20th century, a western entrance and two vestibules were added, further enhancing the Alte Pfarrkirche Alt-Pankow’s functionality. The church endured significant damage during World War II. The towers were reduced to their lower sections. But, like the community it served, Alte Pfarrkirche Alt-Pankow persevered. Restoration efforts in the 1950s brought back the towers. The slate roofs were rebuilt, although slightly lower than the originals. The 1970s brought modernization, including changes to the interior and a new organ. Yet, the spirit of the old church remained, woven into the fabric of the building. Continual renovations, including a major project in 2008, have ensured the Alte Pfarrkirche Alt-Pankow’s survival. This enduring structure stands not just as a place of worship, but as a living chronicle of Pankow’s history. It is a place where the echoes of centuries mingle with the present, inviting us to reflect on the passage of time and the enduring power of community.
