Could a building whisper secrets of a century? Here at the Alte Oper in Erfurt, it certainly feels that way. The Alte Oper isn’t just a building. It’s a vessel overflowing with a vibrant history, a stage that has witnessed countless dramas, comedies, and musical spectacles. Opened on September 15, 1894, as the “Stadt-Theater,” the Alte Oper quickly became the heart of Erfurt’s cultural scene. Imagine the excitement of the grand opening. Over a thousand attendees, dressed in their finest attire, filled the seats and standing areas, eager to witness the magic unfold. The Alte Oper hosted everything from operas and operettas to plays and ballets, its stage echoing with the voices of talented performers and the music of the Erfurt Orchestra. However, the building’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The structure itself posed a recurring problem, leading to frequent closures ordered by the building inspectors. Despite these setbacks, the Alte Oper persevered. In 1923, the city of Erfurt took over its financing, enabling much-needed expansions. During the Nazi era, the theater was renamed “Deutsches Volkstheater,” but performances became sporadic during the war years. Thankfully, the building survived the conflict unscathed. A new chapter began on June 21, 1945, when the Alte Oper reopened as the “Stadttheater” with the approval of the Soviet administration. Later, in 1956, it became known as the “Opernhaus” and joined the ranks of Erfurt’s municipal theaters. However, by 1997, the aging building, despite its rich history, was deemed unsuitable for modern theatrical productions and closed its doors once more. After seven years of silence, the Alte Oper experienced a rebirth. Entrepreneur Wolfgang Staub, now the theater’s director, undertook extensive renovations and reopened the grand venue on its 110th anniversary in 2004. Today, the Alte Oper thrives, its 970 seats filled with audiences enjoying a diverse range of performances. From operettas and musicals to cabaret and concerts, the Alte Oper continues to enrich Erfurt’s cultural landscape. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and the dedication of those who have kept its spirit alive.
