Gazing upon the Alte Kapelle in Laatzen, one might hear whispers of resilience. This isn’t just any chapel. It’s the oldest building in Laatzen, a testament to centuries of faith and community. The Alte Kapelle, first documented in 1325, stands as the southernmost example of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Its red brick whispers tales of a time long past, when the area was under the Bishopric of Minden, and the chapel was linked to the parish of Döhren. Imagine the echoes of the Reformation within these walls in 1529, as the chapel transitioned to Protestantism. The Alte Kapelle has witnessed countless baptisms, weddings, and Sunday services. It has served as a sanctuary through tumultuous times. In 1792, a fire ravaged the surrounding houses, yet the chapel miraculously survived. Sadly, this luck didn’t hold during World War II. In 1943, a bomb struck the Alte Kapelle, leaving it in ruins. Only its foundation remained. Yet, from the ashes, the community rose. In 1953, reconstruction began. The exterior was faithfully restored, mirroring the original design. The interior, however, saw some changes. A wooden barrel vault replaced the flat wooden ceiling. The altar window, depicting the Resurrection of Christ, was a new addition. The bell, installed in 1954, still rings out its call to prayer, rung by hand. Look closely at the liturgical items adorning the altar. These were crafted by the Hanoverian sculptor Siegfried Zimmermann between 1969 and 1973, each piece a testament to the blend of form, function, and faith. The Alte Kapelle continues to serve its community, a symbol of endurance and faith, resurrected from the ruins.
