Alte Elisabeth

Hidden in plain sight, the Alte Elisabeth mine whispers stories of Freiberg’s rich mining past. The Alte Elisabeth isn’t just a museum. It’s a time capsule, preserving Saxony’s oldest mining museum. The mine became a teaching tool for the Freiberg Mining Academy in 1919. It stands as a proud member of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ore Mountain Mining Region, since 2019. The Alte Elisabeth is nestled within the Himmelsgrube Treasure Trove, northeast of Freiberg’s center. This area echoes with the clang of pickaxes from as early as 1168 when silver was first discovered. Over 330 mines, each with its own story, intertwine within the Himmelsgrube. The “Sanct Elisabeth” mine shone brightly among them, particularly in the 16th century. It yielded a staggering 3.7 tons of silver between 1525 and 1673, bolstering Freiberg’s reputation as a silver hub. The buildings you see at the Alte Elisabeth today date back to the early 19th century. They house a preserved prayer room, a vault, and the Treibhaus with its unique roof riders for ventilation. The brick engine house displays the Schwarzenberg-Gebläse, a marvel of neo-Gothic industrial design. This impressive blowing engine, crafted by Christian Friedrich Brendel for the Antonshütte, holds a significant place in German mechanical engineering history. The Alte Elisabeth stands as a monument to Freiberg’s mining legacy, a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of generations past.
