Hidden in plain sight on the Alte Brücke, two bronze mice scamper. These tiny creatures, almost overlooked, are the signature of Professor Gernot Rumpf. He crafted the iconic Bridge Monkey that greets visitors to Heidelberg’s Alte Brücke. This bridge, officially known as the Karl Theodor Bridge, isn’t actually that old. Its nickname stems from the construction of the Theodor Heuss Bridge in 1877. The Alte Brücke, built between 1786 and 1788, replaced a series of wooden bridges. These predecessors succumbed to the wrath of the Neckar River. Floods and ice flows repeatedly destroyed them. Prince Elector Carl Theodor, after witnessing the last wooden bridge crumble in the flood of 1784, commissioned the first stone bridge. This resilient structure, made of Neckar sandstone, has become a beloved landmark. The nine red sandstone arches of the Alte Brücke gracefully span the Neckar River. The bridge, framed by the river and the surrounding mountains, has inspired poets like Friedrich Hölderlin and Gottfried Keller. Countless artists have captured its beauty. Even during wartime, the Alte Brücke played a significant role. In March 1945, German soldiers partially destroyed the bridge. They blew up several arches and pillars to impede the advancing American troops. The destruction, however, proved futile. The Allied Forces still crossed the Neckar. Thanks to the generous donations from Heidelberg’s residents, reconstruction began swiftly after the war. The Alte Brücke was reopened in 1947. Today, the bridge offers more than just passage. It’s a place for reflection and wonder. Observe the flood marks near the bridge gate, a testament to the river’s power. Admire the statues of Elector Karl Theodor and the Roman goddess Minerva. And of course, encounter the Bridge Monkey. Rub its mirrored hand for good luck or its fingers to ensure a return trip to Heidelberg. As you stand on the Alte Brücke, take in the breathtaking 360-degree view. From the Heidelberg Castle to the charming riverfront homes, it’s a vista that embodies the spirit of this historic city.
